SOMERS POINT?Thursday, Oct 4 is the feast day of St. Francis Assisi. He was the founder of the Franciscan Order in 1210 but he is remembered by many for his kindness to and ability to calm the animals. Reverend Edward Namoitka, the pastor of St. Joseph?s Church in Somers Point honored St. Francis Thursday with a blessing of the animals.
The first grade students from St. Joseph?s Elementary School would have loved to bring all their assorted bunnies, kittens, dogs and hamsters in to be blessed by Father Namoitka but since that was not exactly possible on a school day the kids did the next best thing; they brought in pictures of their favorite pets for a blessing.
Teacher Debbi Gentile said the students that did not have a pet, brought over a stuffed animal so they were all very excited when it was time for the prayer that Rev. Namoitka recited. When he completed the prayer he sprinkled holy water on all of the pets.
Father and son, Rob Baselice from Egg Harbor Township and his golden retriever, Lola and his son, Rob Jr. with his golden, Reggie were the first in line to have Rev. Namoitka bless the dogs.
The priest stayed after the children went back to class and offered to bless any animals that came along with their owners. Cathy Tanock who lives nearby the church was very happy to get a blessing for her favorite tabby cat, Max.
